First of all I have seen people ask for help on this many times but I not really seen a sure 'this fixes it' answer.

I tried to update my X-Plane 11 to the latest version.  It downloaded the installer.  Goes through all the steps including checking files. Then it ends with the message The technical problem was: Permission denied...

My X-Plane 11 is on my E: drive, a SSD drive.  I made sure this whole folder and files within it are not Read Only.  All files have permissions of Modify. Read & Execute, Read and Write.  I ran it again with the same result.  I then ran the X-Plane 11 Installer.exe from my E:\X-Plane 11\ folder.  I right clicked on it and chose Run as administrator.  I still get the same same message about Permission denied.  Below is from the X-Plane Installer log file.    In the log file I saw it has  Permission denied. Perhaps you do not have access to a directory or file system (C:\jenkins\design-triggered\source_code\core\files\FILE_ops.cpp:1478.  What is this?  I have no C:\jenkins\ folder at all, never have. Or was this just an example?

I have other applications on this E:drive.  One updates every 2-3 months but it never has a permissions issues.

Hi Mike,

I am not from Laminar Research; just a flight simmer.

Is your anti virus software preventing the update?  Shut the software down and try again.  Many others in this forum have found this simple solution to work.

By the way, if you are trying to update to version 11.30 it is still in the testing phase.  Private testing has been completed along with Beta testing.  Currently in trial release version testing.  When will the official 11.30 release occur?

Thanks for answering so fast.  I turned off my anti-virus software and tried it again with the same Permission Denied message.

Hi Mike,

Sorry I can't help you any more.

Hopefully someone from Laminar or someone with a greater knowledge base than me regarding X-Plane will be able to provide an answer.

SOLUTION FOUND!

You can find a description of my set up above.  What got this to work was I went to the SSD drive (E:) that I have X-Plane on.  I right clicked on the drive to bring up settings.  Clicked on Properties then the Security tab.  There is a list of users.  I highlighted Users (Desktop.xyx123\Users)  and it had Read & Execute, List folder Contents, Read and Write all checked.  Modify was not.  I checked Modify then applied it.  I then tried the update again and it worked!  I was able to update my X-Plane.

The solution was short lived.

This worked for upgrading to 11.25.  Then a few days later the 11.30 upgrade came out and once again I was getting the same Permission Denied message.  This is really getting aggravating that I cannot get updates reliably.  Again this has to be a problem with the X-Plane installer program.  I have other software that updates without any problems.

Real problem found - I had a bad SSD drive.

Well I found my problem and in doing so I have to eat some of my words.   There seems to been another possibility that I had not thought would be a problem.  I bought a new 1Tb M.2 SSD to replace the 500Gb M.2 that I had.  I was going to put X-Plane on it.  I went to save everything that was on the smaller M.2 drive and found that some files could not be copied.  Including the one I kept getting the permissions error on.  So it seems that drive had problems.  I reinstalled X-Plane on another SSD drive that I had and that went fine.  I then did an upgrade to 11.30 and that went fine with no problems.
