Some machines will do that if they get too hot. Is yours very hot when this happens? If so, it could be a blocked vent, which can be cleared, or a worn out fan, which can be replaced.
Does this happen with other software that makes similarly intensive use of 3D graphics? (other simulators / 3D games)
