X-Plane 11 install fails on Mac with "Error contacting the authorization server: Couldn't resolve proxy name"

Question

I just purchased X-Plane 11 but can't download it! The installer fails with network errors. Please help!

My internet connection is fine besides the installer. We use Google Fiber for internet. No special firewalls or AV software. 

Full log attached.

Log shows multiple HTTP requests failing, like:

 

0:00:00.024 E/NET: Download failed with error: 5 for URL http://www.google-analytics.com/collect
0:00:02.644 E/NET: Download failed with error: 5 for URL https://clearancedelivery.x-plane.com/v1/authenticate
0:00:02.644 E/DRM: Error contacting the authorization server: Couldn't resolve proxy name

X-Plane support helped me find that the X-Plane installer had a character in the "network proxy" field of its settings. Deleting that made the install continue. It was really subtle because it was a backtick character (so barely visible). I'm not sure how it got there.
