How to have peripherals communicate w/XP over USB

Question

I'm learning to program micro computers (Arduino, etc) and would like to design my own peripherals for X-Plane 11. I figure I'd like to start with some straight forward like a switch panel. I can build the panel and send data via USB, but I don't know how to send the data to or receive data from the application. Any assistance is appreciated.

This isn't what I was looking for, but it turns out it was what I needed. In pursuing this, I found the references I was looking for vis-à-vis XP's IoC plugin architecture. So, thanks!
