How can I program a custom command for a yoke or keyboard button?

It looks like this was an option in X-Plane 10 but have not been able to figure it out on X-Plane 11.

I should have been more specific.  I'd like to program a custom command that is not shown in the drop down lists.  The manual does not say how to do this.

You are right, it looks like the manual does not  cover every case.

I do not have access to my computer, so I can not send any screenshot, but I am pretty sure that almost every drop down menu contains a "custom" entry or similar, and then you have access to the full list of functions.
