how do you request a different flight level once entered into ATC?

So what I mean is: you have got your flight level confirmed and you want to change it to fly higher or fly lower, easy to do in the plane, but how do you put the request through so that ATC doesn't keep asking you to maintain your current flight level?

It is not possible to make any changes to your flight plan once it's filed with ATC. You would have to cancel the flight plan and file again.

Yeah thats what I do, but in the real world you request the change and adjust accordingly. Maybe look at this as an upgrade to ATC to allow this change should you want it
