I'd like to play online, but all I've seen is people saying you can only pla wth friend on a local network. How is possible that Microsoft Flight Simulator X, made in 2006, has a massive online multiplayer community, but the hyper realistic X-Plane 11, made in 2016, doesn't?

Yes, you can join friends within X-plane 11

Google, "Whats my ip address" note it, get your friends to do the same, share. On the Settings/Network Tab, upper right, input your friends ip addresses adding a line each. Get them to do the same.

You may all need to open UDP port forwarding on each router/firewall (49000-49010) - check youtube for your models, if you dont know how. Allow Xplane11 through your firewalls.

Ensure you all disconnect xSquawkbox and iVap using PluginAdmin (Upper Left Dropdown Menu) simply untick.

LR need to invest a little work as currently multiplayer doesnt send livery data.

Hope this helps

You can certainly play X-Plane on-line.

While X-Plane itself doesn’t have a built-in multiplayer connection, there are a few on-line networks/communities where you can fly with X-Plane.  Unlike the FSX built-in network, they’re cross-platform.  Check out the major ones such as VATSIM, IVAO, PilotEdge.  They offer the realistic, FAA procedures experience that you spoke of.  There you’ll find dozens to hundreds of on-line fliers all over the world at any given time.
