My PC has the following hardware:

AMD E1-2500 APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.4GHz

RAM: 8GB

64 bit architecture x64 bit processor.

I have installed X-Plane 8 as mentioned on the DVD and when trying to run it, all I get is a black screen.  My version of Windows is up to date.

You can try running X-Plane in compatibility mode (Windows XP or Vista). You can read more in "Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows" here.

I've already tried that. I have tried XP service pack 2 and 3 and even Windows 98. Noting is working with regards to game. What does run though is the Plane maker and world maker apps. T

I have also thought about downloading the demo of X-plane 11 to see if it will run on my PC but after downloading the installer I've since found out that the actual demo is 8.5GB to download and I don't have the bandwidth for that. I wanted to try the demo before buying the full version as I'm not paying for the full version if it doesn't work.

I installed X-Plane 8 (demo) on Vista and it runs without comaptybility mode. You can also check system requirements and/or your graphics card drivers.

Some more tech info you can find in log.txt file. The log file is generated automatically and contains diagnostics about your graphics hardware, installation, and any error conditions.
