I added an aircraft unzipped to the aircraft folder in x plane 10. When I ran x plane it did not show up on the start menu. It seems like it is not reading the file of something. I tried at least 10 different planes from x-plane.org. I am sure that windows 8 automatically unzips it for you when you open it up.

Hmm, that´s weird. It sounds like you do everything right, keep tinkering with it! Make sure that the files are really unzipped, it happens all too often that people put their zipped folder into the aircraft folder. X-Plane must be able to see the .acf file for the aircraft.

Other than that, it should be absolutely straightforward. No installing, no registering (unless its a payware aircraft).

Good luck, Jan

As Jan mentions, it sounds like you're doing it correctly. Just make sure after you unzip the original download that there aren't any extra folders in the way. Sometimes zipped bundles need to be separated even further.
