Hello,

first I'd like to say X-Plane 11 is a very fine Sim and worth every penny! But let's come to my question.

I just bought X-Plane 11 on Steam a few Weeks ago as I used to run FSX. My Computer is pretty old:

CPU: i7-2600K
Mobo: Gigabyte Z77
Ram: 8 GB 1333 MHz
SSD: 2x500GB Samsung 850 Evo
GPU: EVGA GTX 660 Ti Signature 2

So as you can see it's not realy up2date. However AMD has just announced Threadripper with up to 32 Threads ergo 16 Cores for 1k €.

My new System would look something like this:

CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16 Cores @ 3,4 GHz Base / 4 GHz Turbo
RAM: 32 GB DDR4 ~3200 MHz
GPU: GTX 1080 Ti or AMD Vega

So my question will X-Plane 11 utilize the 16 Cores/32 Threads? Or is there a limit that X-Plane can handle?

X-Plane is multicore/multithreaded, and as far as I know there's no limit to what X-Plane can handle. If you use a program to watch how many or which threads X-Plane uses, you might end up disappointed. But the reality is: X-Plane goes as fast as it goes. Sometimes we're stalled on the CPU, sometimes on the GPU. However, in general if you buy top of the line hardware, you'll see better performance. I cannot make any guarantees about the cost/benefit analysis though. :)

There are a few articles (like this one) on X-Plane's developer blog if you're interested in more of the nitty gritty of the technical side.

Thanks for the answer and article. Cost/benefit does not matter for me. I just want to have another HEDT and X-Plane will profit from it as I will also be doing some video editing and VMs

Would you recommend the new ryzen 1700 series or an intel processor? What would be your ideal spec for xplane and especially for VR.

I have thr gtx 1070

intel i7 4790

500gb ssd

8gb of ram ddr3.
