Can the intensity of the HUD be increased?

Question

It's almost a complete washout in day operations, but is fine at night.  What else is there to say - it's useless during daylight hours.  Almost impossible to see.

There are datarefs that probably just adjust HUD brightness when it's an instrument in an aircraft. I don't think there's a way to change the view setting without hacking the sim.
