The X-Plane 11 DVD installation is on a 3.3 GHz iMac16.2 with Intel Core i7 quad core, 16 GB, macOS 10.13.4 (17E202). Loaded new Carenado F33A_Bonanza_v1.1.  Previously used X-Plane 10 DVD version extensively for instrument practice.  X-Plane 10 never asked for serial number, only to insert Disk 1.  

Deleted X-Plane 10 after X-Plane 11 install.  

Do I need a serial number for X-Plane 11 DVD version?  If so, where do I find it or get it?

This sounds like the DRM pop up for the Carenado plane. I believe they all include serial numbers you have to use to unlock them. (X-Plane 11 always calls it a "digital download key" never a "serial number".)

I am not with Laminar Research; just a flight simmer.

Just like X-Plane version 10 you have to insert disc 1 of version 11 to run the software.  I am in that same situation.  However with XP10 there was a USB dongle (key) available at extra cost that allowed XP10 to be run and preserved the integrity of and replaced the disc.

Unfortunately there is no such alternative for XP11.  However, it has been suggested to me that an ISO disc or dongle could be created as the replacement for disc 1.  As my system is currently mothballed I have not been able to experiment with this suggestion.  A link I found can be discovered at  https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-burn-an-iso-file-to-a-usb-drive-2619270
