I am trying the X-plane 9.7 demo.  All the terrain is black, even at the demo airport.

I suspect it may be a video driver issue although the later versions of 9 should be compatible with ATI.  Linux mint PC with AMD/ATI Radeon HD7640G.

Log file doesn't show any obvious error.  Any suggestions?

Hey, Thanks for your question! That is very odd - what version of OpenGL are you running here?

OpenGL Render    : Gallium 0.4 on AMD ARUBA (DRM 2.46.0 / 4.8.0-53-generic, LLVM 4.0.0)

I would recommend that your try updating your drivers here! Let me know if this fixes this!

Thanks very much for that.  I found that AMD do not provide proprietary drivers for my card nor AMD catalyst for Mint 19.  Apparently there was a change in the way that Ubuntu handles video which hit Mint at Mint18.

So I installed Mint 17 and the demo works great on that.  Buying it!
