X-Plane only saves movie recordings as .avi. You can also save situations (.sit) and replays (.rep) to share with other X-Plane users. Double check your movie recording settings and make sure they are set high enough to get a quality file, and look for a program to convert the file type.

Get a file converter like AnyVideoConverter and convert your .avi files.  I've been using it for years; perfectly safe.  http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

You can try HandBrake to convert AVI to MP4. HandBrake is an open source and charges you free.
