Hi Don,
It sounds like the default scenery tile for Alaska is missing and you are seeing "water world". Please run the latest installer (available here) and pick the option to "add/remove scenery" and proceed until you get to the selection screen that looks like a world map. Make sure you select the tiles surrounding all of the area you want to install for Alaska--they may not be lined up exactly with the sim scenery.
