I would like to use x plane 10 if a Surface Pro will run it. My main use is to practice instrument flight and IFR approaches.

I have not heard definitively if it is supported or not. Check the system requirements page here, and if it meets the minimum, perhaps try downloading the free demo to see how it goes.

I run X-Plane 10 on my Surface Pro 4.  So far the only issue I have is display drivers crashing, which then locks the simulator.  I have to kill it in the Task Manager.  It seems related to the [shift]-9 view.
