Bought xplane 11 through steam. Install process goes smoothly but in loading it to play, after it reaches near the end of the loading sequence, at the point it says "done with pre-loading" it simply crashes and then windows says its not responding. It has done this 7 or 8 times without ever getting past this point.

My PC is far from new but I'm pretty sure its above the minimum levels, albeit perhaps not by much in terms of the graphics card in particular. I attach the log.txt file in case that helps.

Grateful for any help as to where I might be going wrong.

Thanks

Your graphics card is above minimum requirements but below recommended specs. Please try turning down all rendering settings to minimum to see if that allows you to get flying. You can carefully turn them up following instructions here if that works. If the automatic crash reporter window comes up, please be sure to fill it out & send it.

Many thanks for coming back to me.

I'm afraid that I've never got as far as the home screen of the game and therefore turning down the graphics setting is (presumably) a stage further than I've been able to get! The attached 30 sec video clip shows that during the loading up procedure, it is simply crashing to a weird silhouette and then the xplane not responding box from windows comes up.

Again, any advice would be really appreciated - thanks

I assume the auto crash report is not coming up if you see the Windows "stopped responding box." X-Plane can take an unusually long time to load on slower computers, but it may be getting hung. Please try:

  1. When X-Plane freezes or stops responding, note what the message is above the loading bar.
  2. Open the Task Manager. (Ctr + alt + delete will bring up a list with this option.)
  3. Find the X-Plane program in the list.
  4. Right click on it and pick the option to "create dump file"
  5. When it's done, the pop up will list the file location.
  6. Navigate to the file location in the file explorer window. (It's possible one of the folders in the file path will be hidden. Follow directions here  to show hidden files, if needed.)
  7. Dump files are very large so you may need to compress & upload it to a service like Google Drive or Dropbox, then use the share link.

Hi

Sorry it took a few days to reply, uploading the dump file to google drive was a struggle!

You're right that the auto crash report doesn't come up so I've followed your instructions and the link below will hopefully take you to the dump file.

I'd be really grateful for any suggestions you could give as to how I can get x-plane up and running.

Many thanks

Jonathan

So the video you attached actually shows a flight partially loading. You should have seen the main menu before then, unless in the past you got to the main menu and turned it off in the settings.

You can try resetting your preferences to default:

  • Start STEAM. Goto LIBRARY.
  • Right click on your X-Plane 11
  • Choose Properties.
  • In the rising window choose LOCAL FILES.
  • And than choose BROWSE LOCAL FILES.
  • Now you are in the X-Plane 11 Main (Root) Folder and you see the path in your file explorer.
  • Go to the Output folder & delete the entire preferences folder.
Then start the sim and see if you can skip the intro tutorial and get into the main menu to turn down graphics settings.

The last (nuclear) option would be to delete the install & try a new one.

Thanks (again) for taking the time to offer your advice.

I first of all followed your steps to delete the entire preferences folder and unfortunately the same outcome happened when I restarted the programme. It went straight to the same Welcome to XPlane loading screen of a nighttime cockpit screen coming into land (ie the same screen that you'll have seen in my previous video clip uploaded) and then to the same freezing picture, followed by windows saying the programme was not responding.

I then went for the nuclear option of uninstalling through steam and reinstall (ie downloading all the 50Gb again) but precisely the same process of crashing happened again when I went to play the reinstalled version.

While I hope I'm wrong, I'm assuming its probably at the point where give up and try to get a refund (although how I'm not quite sure)??

If you have any further advice, I'm still keen to get it to work but my initial optimism has somewhat turned to pessimism!!

Thanks

Jonathan

Have you tried updating to 11.02 to see if it helps at all? If not, it might not be possible to use the sim on your machine at this time. I believe there is a way to get a refund via Steam but I am not sure of the specifics.

I had similar experimences, but different thing is that I had successfully runned XP11 for several times. My solution is to copy the backup XP11 folder (after the installation from XP11 server, without running) to replace the XP11 folder. It will work again.  It means that some files of XP11 may be damaged durring its operation.

Hi - thanks for taking the time to offer your advice to me.

Please forgive me if I come across as a real novice, but I'm not 100% clear on what you are suggesting and thought it best to check before making a cock-up.

I have made a backup of XP11 through steam and looking at the folder it has broken it down into 88 separate folders within the backup directory, each labelled Disc_1, Disc_2 etc.

I have then restored the game from the backup through steam, however there was no change in what I experience on trying to load the game.

I just wanted to check if I you think I should again totally uninstall and then reinstall the game, create a backup but then it the bit i'm confused - do you think I should try copying (through windows explorer) the backup files from their directory into the original game's directory, replacing the original files? If so, how do I overcome the 88 disc folders?

Sorry for what must come across as incredibly basic computer knowledge, but any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks again,

Jonathan
