How close do you need to fly to the next way point on a loaded fms flight plan before it switches to the next one?

I have a loaded flight plan, and it includes a couple of way points.  There is some distance that X Plane checks for before updating the GPS to point to the next way point, and I was wondering what that distance was.

In old ProPilot '99 it depended on your altitude (DME distance!): At about 0.8 miles DME distance the next waypoint was selected, and the plane started to turn. I X-Plane it seems you actually have to "cross over" the waypoint.
