Programming an 8 position hat switch

Question

Is it possible to use the 8 position hat switch on my Thrustmaster joystick in the 3D cockpit?  I have been using all of the MS sims for years and thought I would try Xplane.  Seems like a great sim other than assigning buttons is killing me.  I have most of it down now other than the hat switch.

I believe assigning functions to a hat switch should operate like other buttons. Here is the portion of the manual that explains it. Make sure you press the button in the desired direction first, before picking the command to assign.
