Above are my machines complete specs

Dear Sir,

I really frustrated with this whole concept of simming. I have recently bought x plane 11 only because I have invested an expensive rig with high specs and $$$$ of addons for FSX and it never worked. Its like every simmer needs to have an degree in IT just to enjoy this hobby. I moved to Xplane because I thought it would be less cumbersome to install and use.But to my surprise.

I face problems of BSOD, and X plane crashing and asking me to email error reports. I have tries to clear the preferences folder, re run the installer, and even clear shader cache. But it just fails to run. Below is my log.txt file . Also I have no pugins or add ons as yet. Please help me out here as I am really desperate as since this expensive machine I have never been able to sim.

thanks,

Regards

Amaey

Hi Amaey

I'm not with Laminar Research, just a fellow simmer in the UK. I am also a qualified computer technician and built my own bespoke desktop PC.

With that in mind, I can see from the information that you have provided, that you are running the following key components:-

1. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz

2. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card

3. 32GB of RAM

4. 1TB SATA hard drive

5. Windows 7 Professional 64bit

In theory then, assuming none of the above are defective in any way, your PC specification should be more than capable of running XP11

The only further question I would have over and above this, is what is your power supply unit (PSU) spec in term of wattage? You graphics card is very power hungry, so a suitable power supply is essential, so as to avoid total system crashes i.e. BSOD!

XP11 itself, being a software application, should not cause a BSOD, but a hardware issue most certainly will.

Software could cause a crash to desktop (CTD), but as you only have a fresh copy of XP11 and no addons, then I would find this unlikely to be the case here.

Unfortunately your Log.txt file doesn't highlight any issues, other than to show that XP11 suddenly shut down abnormally, after finding all of the default scenery files.

Personally then, at this stage, I feel that the underlying problem here is defective or inadequate hardware and accordingly I would suggest that you download a small piece of software which can be found here: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Software.

This software will 'stress test' your PC to see if there any issues with hardware, including the PSU?

Hope this helps for now

Dear Greengolfer 15,

Thank you so much for the swift response. I did the stress test and half way in the test we again had an BSOD. I could not record the error as the reboot was quite quick.

Please advise what can I do now. Thanks

Hi again

Could you please confirm your PSU wattage capacity?

What I meant is incase the wattage is less and I replace the power supply do you think my problem should be resolved? Because I honestly dont see any reason why my machine cannot accomodate Xplane 11.

I checked on the net and as per Graphics card my PSD should be 600-650 watts. So gonna open the rig and check it now.

Hi, just checked it is 650 watts :(

Dear Greengolfer15,

I even tried to intiate the following over the last couple of days just to try to overcome my problem as these were some of the suggestions on various forums/videos:

Tried to run game on various resolutions

Cleared my preferences folder repeatedly

Cleared shadercache folder

Tried to set my virtual memory to optimal

Ran the Xplane Installer again and verify the files

Downloaded the latest beta/update

Updated the graphics driver directly from NVIDIA site(when you check driver update through device managers it says "Driver is upto date)

Updated my Windows 7 Pro version for all latest updates

All my settings are to the bare minimum inside the setting panel

I have no plugins or add-ons installed as yet.

Hi again

I agree, a 650W PSU should be quite capable of handling the loads required from XP11 and your other hardware.

Aside from that though, something is clearly causing you PC to crash to re-boot (BSOD) and I still feel it is hardware related, but what??

1. Does your PC suffer similar crashes with any other software application, or is it only XP11?

2. Is it possible that your PC has been affected by a virus or malware? A long shot, but it may be worth checking with an anti-virus/malware scan.

3. You may wish to consider downloading a memory test application, such as that found here: https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

4. You stated in your original post that you once tried FSX, but it never worked? Did your PC crash then also or if not, what 'never worked' exactly?

5. Has the latest BIOS firmware and device drivers been downloaded for your Gigabyte Z270M-D3H motherboard?

Really clutching at straws now, not sure what else to suggest, but I really do not believe that XP11 is the root cause of the crashing problems!

Hope this helps for now :-)

Dear Greengolfer15,

  • Well I use this PC purely for gaming, so dont use many others apps besides browsing and downloads etc. Also issues are not just BSOD at times its just XP11 which freezes, so its combination of both.
  • Malware will it still be infected if i do afresh install of Windows 7 Pro. Because before downloading XP 11 i had done a fresh install where I wiped out all old files.
  • Yes FSX was also frustrating, at times worked, at times BSOD, at times freeze, at times BSOD whilst in flights. However what I dont understand how did the demo tutorial load up with the highest resolution for my GPU and screen.
  • Regarding BIOS I used the cd which came with the machines, however when you go to device manager and check for majority of the h/ware it shows drivers are upto date. But if you suggest will try of the net again. Can you suggest someplace where you get reliable ones.
  • I really appreciate your time, but its so frustrating i spend hundreds $$$ buying add ons etc for FSX and couldnt ever enjoy my simming and spent hours trying installs, re installs and nothing, thus moved to Xplane thinking it might work, worse is that I am based in Africa and issues such as connectivity, constant electricity etc we cant take for granted, coupled with my limited IT knowledge ;(

Hi Amaey

Just had another thought in that I believe your GTX1080ti graphics card has two power connections, a six pin and an eight pin connector, side by side on the top of the card.

Could you confirm if this is the case and also confirm if both sockets are occupied by a power supply from the PSU?

Further questions:-

1. Did you purchase your PC 'off the shelf', second hand from someone or was it built bespoke for you?

2. What kind of cooling system does your PC have, air cooled fan or water cooled?

3. Could it be that your CPU is overheating, causing your PC to crash?

Dear Greengolfer15,

  • There is one cable coming and going into the 8 pin socket, and from the 8 pin socket there are wires coming out and going into the 6 pin socket. But both are occupied.
  • It was built for me.
  • I think its an air cooled fan, as there is a fan at the back and brand is cool master Its silverish chrome casing
  • Regarding overheating I wont be a true judge. Apologies my IT skills are very limited.

When I bough it I told the engineering to put NVIDIA GTX 1080i card as thats what was the latest in the market then, told him to give the best 4k monitor then, told him to put max ram which was 32GB then and thought 1TB Hard disk should be enough, Ibelieved these are the key components to best sim experience along with the a processor clock min of 4.0ghz.

Also my side panels are open since I am doing all these hardware investigations, wouldnt that help in someway?
commented by (13 points)
is there an email id to which i can make a video on the inside of the cpu and send?
commented by (2.2k points)

Hi again

OK thanks for the feedback, it appears that your graphics card is connected up properly with both sockets receiving a power supply.

I would confirm also that your hardware spec in general is more than adequate for XP11 requirements, but why your PC still crashes is sadly something of a mystery?

Just to rule CPU temperature out, could you download another piece of free software from https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-gpu-z/ and you will find a little program app looking like that in the photo below.

From this, if you click on the sensors tab, you can keep an eye on your CPU & GPU temperatures, amongst many other items.

Worth a shot :-)

Yes, my email address is [email protected]

Re: your side panels, these are best left on when the PC is functioning normally, as the rear mounted fan is design to draw air from the front panel and out through the rear, thus across the motherboard and other internal components.

It won't hurt leaving the side panels off for a short while though, whilst investigations are ongoing!

Dear Greengolfer15,

Please note the log file and the 2 snapshots were taken while XP11 was loading. First snapshot just when I opened XP11, second one when XP11 was reading secenry files and there was another snapshot say 3 secs before I had another BSOD i was scrolling to see the app and saw CPU temperatures reaching 70 degrees, but this snapshot got corrupted so I could not attach it.I guess the log file you will be able to understand better.

Dear GreenGolfer15,

Thank you so much for your committed support. Finally I am flying :)

To determine if X-Plane 11 will run on your PC

If you want the game to run, your computer must meet the minimum system requirements. Recommended ones usually indicate the specs you need to run the game at maximum graphics settings in 4K and 60 FPS. The latter is not always guaranteed due to the technical problems of the game itself.

System requirements

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 7, 8.1, or 10, 64-bit

  • Processor: Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 CPU with 2 or more cores, or AMD equivalent

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM

  • Graphics: DirectX 11-capable video card from NVIDIA or AMD w/512 MB VRAM

  • DirectX: Version 11

  • Storage: 20 GB available space

  • Sound Card: Default

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows 7, 8.1, or 10, 64-bit

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 6600K at 3.5 ghz or faster

  • Memory: 16 GB RAM

  • Graphics: DirectX 12-capable video card from NVIDIA or AMD w/4 GB VRAM

  • DirectX: Version 12

  • Network: Broadband Internet connection

  • Storage: 65 GB available space

  • Sound Card: Default

Hi Altafa,

Like Greengolfer15 I am not from Laminar; just a flight simmer from down under.

I have watched/read the comments between you and Paul with some interest.

Glad to know you are up and flying.

So, what was the eventual problem causing your concern?

Glenn
commented by (2.2k points)
Hi Glenn

Actually I was corresponding with Amaey in Africa and the problem did turn out to be a hardware issue as expected and that was related to the RAM memory modules.

Amaey spoke to the person who built his PC and was advised to swap the memory modules into other slots on the motherboard and apparently that fixed the problem :-)

Hope you're doing okay with your treatment, thinking of you!

Paul
